Problem Solving or Solutions Building?

Problem solving or Solution building?
We have all had the urge to find someone with answers to our pressing questions. The more urgent our need, the more hopeful we are to find someone to provide answers. Problem solving can be thought of as someone coming in with the answers to your questions. 'Do this' and 'don’t do that'. Our sense of urgency can get in the way of thoughtful evaluation. Having our questions answered can provide a dramatic sense of relief; “I am glad that’s over!”

The problem with this question and answer model is that, in the workplace, the problems are often more complex and therefore the answers need to be developed. This is the true solution building. When was the last time you were able to find an off-the-shelf answer that didn’t need tweaking to fit the need? Often these answers are based on past experience; "this worked before so we will use it again". In the context of the workplace, these might be the obvious fixes for anything from dealing with employees or clients or simply getting work done. Answers are never tailored to the exact situation but rather they fit the pre-defined understanding of the “question and answer” model.
Solution building represents a fuller understanding of the nature of the issues involved and working with the client to develop ways of dealing with them most effectively within their environment. These are often processes for addressing needs and not simply single answer “fixes”. Any effort that does not incorporate the total systems view of people, processes, and technology, is unlikely to truly resolve the issues. It may affect one or more of the symptoms for some period of time, but the underlying problem is not addressed. Unresolved issues have a way of returning to vex us again. True and reliable solutions are built at Workplace Solutions. Give us a call to discuss your needs today.

Welcome to the first entry of the Workplace Solutions blog. We will use this blog to communicate with you about common (and sometimes uncommon) workplace problems and some potential solutions as well.

Most organizations are operating at or near capacity at all times. Ask the average manager and they will tell you they have more to do than time to do it. In this environment, even a small distraction can derail your team’s efficiency.

Workplace Solutions provides the services you need to stay on track and manage most effectively. The advantage to the manager is that we save you time and money by taking the challenges off your desk while you work on growing your bottom line.

See our blog for ongoing ideas about managing your business and organizational challenges.
